Haptonomie - what's that you say?
Dear little soul
We had our first haptonomie session last Thursday and our next will be next week Friday. It was a nice experience, wasn't it? Are you looking forward to the next session?
Haptonomy is a funny sort of therapy and hard to describe. Dutch doctor Frans Veldman is its creator. Haptonomy is about 'touch' and 'emotions' and establishing or re-establishing contact with oneself in one's body, or with other people through being more physically aware. The official website says: "Haptonomy is the science of human emotional (affective) relations and interactions i.e. the Science of Affectivity."
Our "haptonoom" is a lady perhaps in her 50s, who was formerly a midwife. She decided to go more into a guidance role for parents to be, and felt that the attention paid to fathers to be was lacking. So her approach is that while the pregnancy and birth is always focused on the mother and child, there should be ways to help the father make contact with the baby and learn how to support the mother during labour. I think that's cool and something that your Soul Papa is very excited about doing.
First contact with baby
Haptonomy allows the mother and father to start to bond with their baby via touch. Do you remember how your Soul Papa put his hand on my tummy? In the session, you didn't really move much, and our haptonoom said that that's also a reaction. Like, "whose is that hand? It's not my mummy's!" Over the week, the baby has responded to your touch. Soul Papa also learnt to apply light pressure and ‘rocking’ the baby can also be done at home.
Why do it?
Haptonomy allows both me and your Soul Papa to share the experience of my physical pregnancy in a tactile way and to start bonding with the unborn child. I understand that it can also help raise my awareness of what's happening during birth, because the baby’s position and movements are much better known.
Always open to new experiences if it means getting closer to you, my love.
Your Soul Mama
